Monty Coleman has over 20 years of progressive accounting experience working with a broad spectrum of ownership structures and industries, including professional services, ecommerce, biopharmaceutical, retail, construction and magazine publishing. Due to the diverse nature of her background, she is a hands-on Controller and has the ability to quickly adapt to changing client environments. Ms. Coleman is committed to providing the highest level of client service through her professionalism and problem-solving skills.
Since joining Rankin McKenzie in 2003, Ms. Coleman has served as part-time Controller for a variety of companies in the Research Triangle area including Windchannel Communications Inc., Replay Photos Inc., HireNetworks Inc., Field2Base Inc, ClearImage LLC., Metro Magazine Inc., AVIC Inc., as well as having served as RANKIN McKENZIE's internal Controller for a period of two years. As a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor, she has also provided Quickbooks training and consulting services to various businesses on a monthly or as needed basis. Currently, Ms. Coleman serves as Controller for PhaseBio Pharmaceuticals Inc., BioAgilytix Labs Inc., and eMinor Inc. D/B/A Reverbnation.com.
Ms. Coleman earned a Bachelor's degree with honors in Business with a concentration in Accounting from Wingate University. She a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the North Carolina Association of CPAs.
Professional Career Highlights:
- From 1999 to 2003, Ms. Coleman worked with small or start-up businesses, guiding them through all the processes of getting up and running, including initial filings for incorporation, setting up an accounting system, payroll, and sales tax issues.
- In 1998, Ms. Coleman served as Accounting Manager for Investors Title Insurance Company in Chapel Hill. In that capacity, she was responsible for all accounting and payroll/employee benefits, all quarterly and year-end financial statements for the company's annual shareholder report, as well as all Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, which required her to act as liaison with the Company's external auditors, financial printers and SEC attorneys. While at Investors Title Insurance Company, Ms. Coleman prepared pro-forma business case models for new business proposals, analyzed alternate lines of business opportunities, and developed and implemented new "non-monetary" employee benefits such as "flex-time" and "new idea" awards to enhance existing employee benefit programs. She was also involved with securing new benefit plans for the company's employees.
- In Ms. Coleman's capacity of Business Analyst for Carolina Power & Light Company (Now Progress Energy) from 1996 to 1997, she was a member of a six-person Accounting Unit that was responsible for all external and internal financial reporting of the 7000+ employee company. Ms. Coleman was awarded the Company's PACE award for successfully leading a project team to address accounting issues related to the company's employee benefit plans. She also received the Company's Key Performer award for her role in preparing the company's Annual Report to Shareholders.
- Ms. Coleman served as Financial Reporting and Planning Manager for Raleigh Federal Savings Bank (Now First Union) from 1992 to 1996. She was responsible for the preparation and dissemination of all internal and external financial reporting of the Bank. During her time at Raleigh Federal Savings Bank, she streamlined the regulatory reporting processes of the Bank resulting in significantly less preparation time and identified and implemented a method of tracking employee incentive stock options by designing reports, which resulted in a more effective management tool. Additionally, Ms. Coleman played a key role in the conversion of the company's accounting system to a new system, which significantly enhanced reporting abilities.
- Ms. Coleman was a Staff Auditor at KPMG Peat Marwick in Raleigh, NC during all of 1991 There, she participated in external audits of public school systems, insurance companies and financial institutions.
- Ms. Coleman started her career as an Internal Auditor for First Federal Savings Bank (Now BB&T) from 1987 through 1990. She performed extensive audits of mortgage lending, consumer lending, deposits and branch operations to evaluate the adequacy of internal controls . She was heavily involved with uncovering an embezzlement of $25,000 which resulted in a conviction of an employee.
